Welfare for the Rich

Welfare for the rich, but not for the rest of us.

It is amazing to me how Americans can elect so-called “representatives” who rip-off the middle-class and the poor every chance they get!

In a recent article of the NY Times called “The New Resentment of the Poor” the author writes “Republican leaders, who think nothing of widening tax loopholes for corporations and multimillion-dollar estates, are offended by the idea that people making less than $40,000 might benefit from the progressive tax code...At a time when high-income households are paying their lowest share of federal taxes in decades, when corporations frequently avoid paying any tax, it is clear who should bear a larger burden and who should not.

And as if that is not enough to make your blood boil I found this article “Where Pay for Chiefs Outstrips U.S. Taxesby David Kocieniewski – August 31, 2011  which tells us how large, profitable companies are engaged in tax AVOIDANCE while taxpayers are squeezed at the same time blaming the poor for taking money from the middle class who do the work and pay the taxes. George Carlin defined the economic and social situation in the United States. He said “The upper class keeps all of the money, pays none of the taxes. The middle class pays all of the taxes, does all of the work. The poor are there… just to scare the shit out of the middle class. Keep ’em showing up at those jobs.

The problem is not the poor but welfare for the rich!!!. “At least 25 top United States companies paid more to their chief executives in 2010 than they did to the federal government in taxes, according to a study released on Wednesday….ample evidence suggests that C.E.O.’s and their corporations are expending considerably more energy on avoiding taxes than perhaps ever before — at a time when the federal government desperately needs more revenue to maintain basic services for the American people.

Walter Cronkite In Vietnam

Walter Cronkite In Vietnam

Walter Cronkite is alleged to have criticized the system of campaign finance which allows elections to “be purchased”… he noted all the European democracies “provide their candidates with extensive free airtime…of all the major nations worldwide that profess to have democracies, only seven…do not offer free airtime.”

This puts the United States on a list with Ecuador, Honduras, Malaysia, Taiwan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago. “Uncle” Walter Cronkite can hardly have been accused of being a hard core lefty of any sort, he was telling us the game is rigged and nothing will change that. Except perhaps, a total overhaul of what passes for democracy in America. Good luck on that…
